The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, has assured the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of management’s commitment towards a transparent execution of activities.
The anti-corruption committee, which made up of staff, is situated at the university’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).
In his welcome address at the formal inauguration ceremony of the new NOUN-ACTU committee members at the university’s headquarters, the VC said NOUN is fully ICPC compliant as doing the right thing is already embedded in the system.
“We are most equitable in terms of providing services to everyone,” he said.
Prof. Adamu charged the committee members to investigate and ask questions to get the full details of issues before blowing the whistle.
He asked the ICPC to make sure that members of the committee are provided with the right skills and necessary information to enable them function effectively.
The VC also expressed delight that the clause of the NOUN Act, which stated that NOUN was a part-time and correspondence institution has being expunged and amended to a full-time as well as an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution will fully ,establish its credibility.
In his goodwill message read by the commission’s Head of Anti-Corruption Unit, Mr. Kuatsea Justin, the ICPC chairman, Ekpo Nta, Esq, expressed delight that “NOUN is also joining forces with other establishments of government in waging a sustained fight against the scourge of corruption in the country.”
Mr. Nta said that NOUN could only realize the goal of its Mission Statement by providing accountable and transparent services, hoping that the committee members would be sincere, and be dedicated in the discharge of their duties.
The ICPC Chairman however advised the members to “fully gear up to the responsibilities of their assignment and exhibit positive attributes, good character and showcase high ethical standard of integrity and dedication to anti-corruption”.
The Head NOUN-ACTU and Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Ifeanyi Ikenze, in his opening remarks, said the unit had since its first assignment, endeavored to sustain its primary mandate within the university community through corruption prevention strategies, education and enlightenment programmes and promotion of ethics and compliance with ethical codes.
He said since corruption is a global scourge, their intent is to integrate both management and staff in aggressive campaign that will re-asses, re-examine and re-construct ethical compliance to work-place practices and procedures.
Mr. Ikenze however assured that the committee would be unbiased and transparent in discharging its function as provided for in the relevant statuses and instruments of Law, saying they are ready to collaborate with all Directorates, Units, Faculties and Centres in order to foster progress and development for the University.
The Committee is comprised of the Chairman Mr. Ifeanyi Ikenze, CSP Richard S. Ejeh (rtd), Dr. Eric Omazu, Mallam Nasir Marafa, Barr. Pilngwa T. Lassa, Barr. Arese Aishida, Mrs. Blessing Eyiolorunpe, Mr. Paul M. Aliyu, Mr. Jelili B. Sufian and Mr. Umar Abdulkadir as members.
The ICPC chairman used the occasion to hand over the handbook titled “Standing Order For The Operations of the Anti Corruption and Transparency Units (ACTU) For MDAs to the Vice-Chancellor.
